Oak Park, CA
At the southern base of Simi Peak, is a place offering a beautiful mix of nature and suburban life. This is Oak Park, a community some 2,600 acres wide, bordering Los Angeles County on the south, North Ranch on the west, and open land to the north and east. Oak Park is considered a small town by today’s standards, primarily residential, where single-family homes and apartments prevail.
Early on, Oak Park saw to it to balance both housing and commercial needs. They do this with extensive greenbelts and neighborhood parks. Some of the popular parks in Oak Park are the Oak Canyon Community Park and the Medea Creek Natural Park. These were built and are currently maintained by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District.
Although Oak Park is not an incorporated city, it is considered to have a significant independent population, with its own school district, civic association and more. There was a time when residents were given a chance to either become part of Thousand Oaks, become its own city, or maintain its unincorporated status. Oak Park eventually decided on the third option. A majority of residents felt their interests were best met this way.
